John Cage, Kultfigur der neuen Musik, hat seit den dreissiger Jahren unabhängig und experimentell komponiert. Neben oft nur scheinbar klassischen Besetzungen treten originelle Instrumenten- und Stimmenkombinationen. Das gewagteste Stück (erst in diesem Jahr uraufgeführt!) ist 4’33’’ (1952) für beliebige Instrumente – die keinen einzigen Ton spielen. Das fünf Jahre ältere Nocturne dauert gleich lang. «In Nocturne an attempt is made to dissolve the difference between string and piano sounds though the convention of melody and accompaniment is maintained. The character of the piece is atmospheric and depends for its performance on a constant rubato and the sustaining of resonances» (J. Cage).
